Louise Bourgeois died today at the age of 98. Bourgeois is my favorite sculptor. I don’t think you can be around her work without it getting to you. It’s like nightmare images made into these imposing, naturalistic, violent objects. She tapped into something powerful and instinctive; this mess of fear and desire that was was often as grotesque as it was alluring. Her greatest and best-known work came late in her life, and she kept going til the end, which is very inspiring in and of itself. Brilliance works on its own schedule.
